This Is All The SEO Basics In 2022 Should You Know Before You Start SEO

1- Before You Start Writing

SEO Plan For New Website

A- Choose a good keyword

The first step is to choose the main keyword (or phrase) that you want your article (or page) to be well featured on Google. Imagine that you work for a travel agency and you want to write an article about Cambodia tourism. You must first conduct a survey to determine what Internet users are searching for in this topic.

The easiest way to get started is to use Google Keyword Planner. This free tool estimates the monthly search volume for any search term.

Note: Since Google Keyword Planner is built into Google Ads, you must open an AdWords account to access it. I assure you that opening an Adwords account is also free. You can also use Ubersuggest which, in addition to the size, will give you chances to get to the first page of Google results.

Google Keyword Planner tells me that "travel to Cambodia" gets 720 searches per month. This is a good start, however, so don't jump right into writing your own content.

B- Read what your competitors write about it?

Now that you have your key phrase, read what has already been written about it.

Define competing pages

To do this, open a tab on Google Chrome in incognito mode. Thus, you are sure that Google will not take into account what it knows about you to present the results to you. This results in a non-customized and therefore more standard search list.

To switch to "Private Browsing" mode in the Chrome web browser, go to the menu at the top right of the window. This feature is also present in Safari, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.

Once you are in incognito mode, start a search with your keyword phrase. For example, "Travel to Cambodia".

Check out the competing pages

Ignore sponsored results marked with a small green "ad", and browse all content on the first page of Google. The ten results shown are your competitors or rather your competition pages. You will find ideas there, but above all identify the missing information to distinguish yourself.

In short, you are finding a way to write a better article and therefore it should have a larger audience. The number of clicks affects your SEO. So, if your content is better, it will be shown more often. So Google will naturally bring it up in search results. As a consequence, more people will read it.

2- Writing High-Quality Content

Now that you know what your competition looks like, it's time to write content that resonates with your readers. This is definitely the hardest part, but it is very important. Your content must be of high quality. It doesn't matter if your content is for a business blog, e-commerce site, or landing page, it should be better than others. If not, neither Google nor your audience will notice.

So, make a special effort to write content that is more impactful, flexible, and visible... In this step, think primarily about your readers. This should now be your only goal.

3- Optimize Your Content To Get A Good Rank On Google

Once you've written the best possible content for your readers, you should also make Google a little "fun" by respecting a few simple on-page SEO rules: Go back to your web page.

During this step:

A- Enter your keyword in the title of your page

It's obvious, but I'll say it anyway, your page title should contain your keyword. In addition, the title should also be attractive so that people actually want to click on it. In the example I gave on Cambodia, it's clear that a title like "10 Destinations Not to Be Missed on an Exceptional Trip to Cambodia" is more compelling than just "Travel to Cambodia".

B- Enter your keyword in the URL and in your content

Another way to tell Google what your content is about is its URL. Here I'm talking about what comes after ".com" in the URL. Let's take an example: What URL will Google understand best?

this? "www.monagencedevoyage.com/53954-77"

or is this? "www.monagencedevoyage.com/ten-destinations-travel-cambodia"

The second course! Even if the first does not completely ruin your efforts to tag your site on Google, the second will necessarily contribute more.

In addition, Internet users often copy the URL of a content to share, and if that URL is clear, it will encourage them to click on it to find out more.

Note in the example, that I intentionally removed from the URL the "weak" words like the, that, our, your, ... not only does Google care about it a lot, but it also shortened it to be more readable.

C- Enter your keyword in your translations

You should structure your web pages with a headline at the top, followed by multiple subtitles along with your content. This way people browsing your article will not only know what it is about, but it also helps Google understand exactly what your article is about.

Tip: To properly denote content on Google, add the keyword phrase at least once in one of your translations.

D- Enter your keyword in the name and alt text for your photos

If your article contains images (and you should), use those images to help Google fully understand the content of your content.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Image filename
  2. Alt and title attributes for image tags

Image filename

To change the name of the image, simply change the name of the image on your computer before sending it to WordPress or another CMS. For example, replace a file name like "745326.jpg" with "Trip to Cambodia - Phnom Penh".

If you, like me, use a lot of images in each post, you can also entrust the renaming of image files to a WordPress plugin like Media File Renamer.

Alt and title themes for your photos

The 'Alt Text' and 'Title' must be entered once the image is uploaded into WordPress. Without going into technical detail or going into detail today, the "alt text" attribute in addition to the "title attribute" is used by Google's algorithms to figure out what your image is about. In WordPress, this is simply done. In many other aspects, image optimization is crucial to ranking content well on Google.

E- Entering internal links

If you don't select all the other content, who will do it for you? For this, it is important that your best content links to other pages on your site. Take every opportunity to remind your audience of the content you've already written. Pay special attention to the links between your content, digital marketing experts call this work the internal link.

I also advise you to review the content of your old articles from time to time to improve accordingly. The "automatic" way to do this is to add articles within and/or below each article that talks about a related topic.

4- Get External Links

Finally, and not the easiest, get backlinks. Backlinks are links that other sites place in their content and point to your content.

Be aware that Google's algorithm relies heavily on external links to determine article quality. This is quite logical: you can constantly talk about yourself and your own skills. But who will believe you? On the other hand, once others start talking about you, your credibility will increase.

Obviously, if you've produced quality content, other sites are more likely to cite it. But the truth is more complicated since you will have to look for external links. This means encouraging website owners who have a topic related to your topic to add links to your content.

To deduce how to properly tag content on Google

This checklist for referring content on Google is clearly not complete. The SEO algorithms used by Google are even more complicated than that. And what's more, it is constantly evolving. But, by following these basic guidelines, you will definitely get a little ahead of your competition, and you will probably notice that your articles get more traffic from Google. And then you can go to more sophisticated technology.
